Winter tires remain the best choice for severe winter weather

Updated: Jun 1, 2020

Winter tires remains the best choice for severe winter weather as nothing outperforms a dedicated winter tire on snow and ice. Driving in the winter is a challenge even for the most experienced drivers. In addition it seems like every year the winters get worse and worse with unprecedented amounts of snow covering the roads and severe winter storms becoming more and more common. This is why having proper snow tires is important as they are made specifically to deal with snow and ice. Generally any tires that hold the ”Three Peak Mountain Snowflake” symbol are officially approved for use in these conditions. This emblem exist on all winter tires , studded tires or non-studded alike, as well as on all-weather tires.

The reason dedicated winter tires are the best choice for severe winters is because these tires in comparison with all-weather tires are made only for winter. Even though all-weather tires hold the same “Three Peak Mountain Snowflake” emblem like winter tires they are made with some compromises allowing them to be functional for the rest of the year. In comparison the dedicated winter tires are made only for winter weather which means that everything from the tread pattern to rubber compounds are made specifically for winter conditions. Winter tires exist both non-studded or as studded tires.

If in the market for a good winter tire you might want to consider the Nokian Nordman 7 winter tires that exist both factory studded or without studs leaving the option open. These tires offer stable handling coupled with extreme winter grip on ice, snow and wet surfaces alike. Whether choosing the studded or non-studded version you can rest assured that you will be well equipped to handle the most treacherous of winters.  They also obviously exist in many different dimensions so before going shopping for winter tires you need to look up the manufacturer’s recommended tire dimensions for you make and model car.

If your manual states you need the dimensions 265/75/16 then you need to look for 265/75/16 winter tires

The decision whether to get non-studded tires or studded tires depends on where you live and what kind of driving you will be doing. Studded tires generally perform better on ice and hard packed snow,  so if you live in an area with these conditions you might be better off investing in studded tires. On the other hand if this is not the case you might opt for the convenience of non-studded tires that come with less disadvantages and regulations.

In general as long as you have proper snow tires with the correct dimensions for your vehicle make and model then you are well equipped to handle even severe winter weather. There have been many new advances in winter tires making them a good choice for severe winter conditions either with or without studs. The rubber compound is formulated to handle temperatures far below freezing and with tread patterns that allow for relentless grip.
